Zero-grazing systems cut and carry forage to housed cattle year-round, removing pasture access with welfare implications that require careful management.
Zero-grazing represents a fundamental welfare compromise - removing cattle from their natural habitat and eliminating foraging behaviour. While welfare can be maintained through high housing quality, excellent nutrition, and lameness management, the welfare loss from absence of natural behaviour is real and requires active compensatory management. Partial grazing access when practical provides significant welfare benefit.
