Geladas are unique grass-grazing primates from the Ethiopian highlands requiring large, complex social groups for adequate welfare.
Gelada welfare in zoos is challenging due to their complex, large-group social organisation and specialised feeding ecology. Small zoo groups cannot replicate the rich social environment of wild herds. Providing large grazing areas, multiple social options, and appropriate group compositions that allow natural social behaviour expression is the welfare priority for this often overlooked primate species.
