Social housing of primates in zoos requires species-specific group structures that meet cognitive, social, and developmental needs throughout the life course.
Primate welfare is fundamentally social. Isolation causes severe psychological harm in every primate species studied. Social housing requirements must be species-specific, respecting natural group structures and social needs throughout the life course. Young primates raised without adequate social experience develop lasting behavioural abnormalities that impair their welfare and ability to participate in group living as adults.
