Calf nutrition in the pre-weaning period profoundly affects growth, immune development, and lifetime production performance.
Conventional restricted milk feeding causes chronic mild hunger that impairs welfare and development during the most critical growth period. Calves fed at or near ad libitum show better cognitive performance, reduced abnormal behaviours, and greater lifetime productivity. Enhanced milk feeding represents a welfare and productivity improvement - the common assumption that hungry calves are easier to wean is not supported by evidence.
