Sea lice resistance to chemical treatments is growing, forcing use of more welfare-damaging mechanical treatments - resistance management is a welfare priority.
Lice resistance to chemical treatments is a welfare crisis in salmon aquaculture. As chemical efficacy falls, producers escalate to mechanical treatments - thermal bath, involving heating water to 28-34C, causes significant heat stress in salmon. The welfare-sensitive response to resistance is prevention rather than escalation: biological control through cleaner fish, reduced stocking density to slow lice transmission, and synchronised fallowing to break lice cycles. Investing in prevention is both better welfare and better economics.
