Controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) using inert gases is increasingly used in poultry slaughter as a potential improvement over electrical waterbath stunning.
Slaughter is one of the most critical welfare moments in poultry production. CAS systems that avoid conscious shackling and invert stages represent a potential improvement, but gas choice matters significantly. High CO2 concentrations cause distress and should be avoided in favour of inert gas mixtures.
