Sun bears are intelligent, highly active foragers that require complex enrichment to meet their behavioural needs in captivity. Poor enrichment leads to stereotypies.
Sun bears without adequate foraging enrichment develop stereotypic behaviours indicating chronic frustration and poor welfare. Their highly specialised foraging adaptations require challenging, complex substrates to be properly stimulated. Zoos should provide multiple novel enrichment opportunities daily rather than static installations.
