Aquaculture disease outbreaks cause significant welfare impacts and production losses. Effective biosecurity prevents the suffering associated with mass mortality events.
Mass mortality events from disease cause enormous welfare harm. Fish dying from bacterial septicaemia, viral haemorrhagic disease, or parasitism experience prolonged suffering before death. Preventing outbreaks through biosecurity is far preferable to treating established disease. Investment in biosecurity infrastructure and monitoring is therefore a major welfare priority.
