Wild Pheasant Game Bird Welfare

Pheasants are shot as game birds in the UK following release from captivity. Welfare concerns span rearing, release, and shooting practices.

Key Facts

An estimated 35 million pheasants are released annually in the UK
Released pheasants have reduced survival compared to wild birds
Rearing conditions including stocking density affect welfare during rearing
Wounded birds that escape shooting drives suffer from injuries
RSPCA and BASC guidelines provide welfare standards for rearing and shooting

Welfare Considerations

Game bird welfare spans rearing, release, and shooting. Overcrowded rearing conditions cause feather pecking and other problems. Released birds face predation, vehicle collisions, and starvation if released in poor habitat. Wounded birds that escape shooting drives experience suffering before death or recovery. Evidence-based welfare standards at all stages reduce these impacts.
