Tapirs are semi-aquatic mammals that use water extensively for thermoregulation and behaviour. Access to appropriate water features is essential for welfare.
Tapirs denied access to appropriate water features cannot thermoregulate effectively and are denied a core natural behaviour. Swimming and bathing are highly motivated behaviours that contribute significantly to positive welfare state. Well-designed tapir enclosures with adequate pool provision support both physical thermoregulation and psychological welfare.
