Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine infection affecting entire female cats. Prevention through neutering and emergency treatment of established cases save lives.
Pyometra causes acute systemic illness with toxaemia, endotoxaemia, and without treatment, septic shock and death. Affected cats experience significant suffering during the disease course. Emergency surgery is effective but carries anaesthetic risk in critically ill patients. Neutering eliminates pyometra risk entirely and is the most effective welfare intervention.
