Pangasius (basa fish) farmed in Vietnam is widely exported globally. Welfare standards in production lag behind consumer expectations in importing countries.
Pangasius farmed at high density in poor water quality conditions experience chronic welfare compromise. While the species is tolerant of conditions that would kill salmonids, they still experience stress and have welfare needs that should be met. Certification schemes that include pangasius welfare standards are developing but adoption is inconsistent.
