Enrichment complexity - providing multiple types of material simultaneously - provides greater welfare benefits than single-type enrichment provision.
Pigs with access to complex, multi-modal enrichment show greater reduction in aggression and abnormal behaviour than those with single-type enrichment. The combination of physical stimulation (rooting), oral activity (chewing), and cognitive novelty addresses multiple behavioural needs simultaneously. Enrichment provision standards should specify complexity not just presence.
