Outdoor access provides welfare benefits for pigs through natural behaviour expression, environmental enrichment, and positive experiences.
Outdoor pig systems, when well-managed, provide significantly better welfare than intensive indoor systems. Natural behaviours including rooting, mud bathing, and social interaction can be fully expressed. However, poorly managed outdoor systems with high stocking density or inadequate shelter can have worse welfare than indoor systems. Management quality determines welfare outcome.
