Pastern dermatitis (mud fever) is a common and painful skin condition in horses kept in wet, muddy conditions. Prevention through management is far preferable to treatment.
Mud fever causes painful skin erosion and scabbing that causes lameness in severe cases. Daily inspection and management of leg hygiene during wet conditions prevents most cases. The welfare cost of established mud fever - including the painful process of scab removal during treatment - makes prevention the clear welfare priority.
