Zoo Sun Bear Foraging Enrichment

Sun bears have specialised foraging behaviours requiring complex enrichment to maintain physical and psychological welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Sun bears have elongated tongues evolved for extracting honey and insects
Foraging occupies 60-80% of wild sun bear waking time
Captive sun bears show high rates of oral stereotypy without adequate foraging enrichment
Honey feeders, termite mound simulators and puzzle feeders address natural behaviour
Regular enrichment rotation maintains novelty and motivation

Welfare Considerations

Sun bear welfare in captivity depends critically on the availability of foraging challenges. Without species-appropriate opportunities to search, manipulate and extract food, sun bears develop chronic stereotypies indicating poor welfare. Commitment to daily foraging enrichment is a minimum welfare standard.
