Wild Red Kite Range Expansion Welfare

Red kite reintroduction across England and Ireland has been hugely successful but brings new welfare challenges including lead poisoning from shot game.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Lead poisoning from spent ammunition causes prolonged neurological suffering and death. It is the most significant preventable welfare harm for red kites. Transition to non-toxic shot in shooting sports would eliminate this welfare and conservation problem. Individual poisoned birds found alive can often be treated if found promptly.
