Wild Harvest Mouse UK Conservation

The harvest mouse is Britain's smallest rodent and faces significant habitat loss through agricultural changes to cereal field management.

Key Facts

Harvest mice build spherical nests woven around grass stems in tall vegetation
Modern combine harvesting and field margin management reduce nesting habitat
Their small size makes them highly vulnerable to cold and predation
Population monitoring uses nest searches in winter vegetation before cutting
Agri-environment schemes providing grass margins support harvest mouse populations

Welfare Considerations

Harvest mouse welfare is primarily threatened through habitat loss causing cold exposure, predation vulnerability, and loss of breeding sites. Farm management changes that maintain tall grass margins provide welfare benefits for individual mice alongside population conservation. Nest monitoring programs avoid disturbing active nests.

What You Can Do

Support agri-environment schemes maintaining tall grass margins
Look for spherical harvest mouse nests when walking in autumn grasslands
Report harvest mouse nest sightings to local wildlife recording groups
