Zoo Capybara Aquatic Welfare Needs

Capybaras are highly aquatic rodents requiring access to appropriate water features for physical and psychological welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Wild capybaras spend significant time in water for thermoregulation and predator escape
Aquatic access allows expression of swimming, diving and social water play
Foot and skin health benefit from regular water access
Social group management is important - capybaras are highly gregarious
Water temperature management affects motivation for aquatic behaviour

Welfare Considerations

Capybara welfare in zoos depends significantly on aquatic access. Without appropriate pools or rivers in their enclosure, capybaras cannot express a major component of their natural behaviour repertoire. Heated outdoor pools with appropriate depth and access points are a welfare necessity for this species.
