Wild Tern Colony Welfare UK

UK tern colonies including common, Arctic and little terns face welfare threats from predation, disturbance and climate-driven prey changes.

Key Facts

UK hosts five breeding tern species including globally important little tern populations
Ground-nesting terns are highly vulnerable to fox and mink predation
Human disturbance of colonies causes mass nest abandonment and chick mortality
Electric fencing around colonies dramatically reduces predation pressure
Warmer seas are shifting sand eel distribution affecting chick feeding success

Welfare Considerations

Tern chick welfare is acutely vulnerable to both predation and starvation from reduced prey availability. Managed tern colonies with predator exclosures and disturbance control demonstrate far better welfare outcomes. Volunteer warden programs providing disturbance management directly improve individual chick survival.

What You Can Do

Respect exclusion zones around tern colonies during breeding season
Support volunteer warden programs at local tern colonies
Donate to seabird conservation charities protecting tern breeding sites
