The smooth snake is Britain's rarest reptile, confined to southern heathland with very specific habitat requirements and welfare sensitivities.
Smooth snake welfare is primarily threatened by habitat loss and disturbance during basking. Their sedentary nature and requirement for specific micro-habitats makes individual animals particularly vulnerable to habitat management activities. Pre-clearance surveys and careful habitat management timing protect individual animals.
