Polar bears in captivity face welfare challenges from warm climates and the expectation that their needs can be met in zoo environments increasingly questioned by welfare science.
Polar bear welfare in captivity is inherently compromised by environmental differences from their natural Arctic habitat. While enrichment can improve quality of life, the fundamental mismatch between species needs and achievable captive conditions raises questions about whether polar bear captivity can adequately meet welfare needs.
