Wild Nightjar Heathland Welfare

Nightjars are crepuscular migratory birds whose UK welfare depends on lowland heathland management providing open areas for aerial insect hunting.

Key Facts

Nightjars arrive from sub-Saharan Africa in May to breed on lowland heathland
Males give distinctive churring calls on territories throughout summer nights
They nest on bare ground making eggs and chicks vulnerable to predation and trampling
Heathland management including scrub clearance creates suitable open foraging habitat
UK nightjar population has recovered modestly with heathland conservation work

Welfare Considerations

Nightjar welfare during UK breeding depends on appropriate heathland management maintaining open areas for aerial insect foraging. Their ground-nesting habit makes them acutely vulnerable to trampling and dog disturbance, making seasonal path management an important welfare intervention.

What You Can Do

Keep to paths and keep dogs on leads in heathland nightjar areas during breeding season
Support heathland conservation organisations managing habitat for nightjars
Participate in nightjar dawn survey counts that monitor breeding population trends
