Wild Garden Warbler Summer Welfare

Garden warblers are summer migrants breeding in UK scrub and woodland edges whose welfare depends on insect abundance for chick feeding during their brief UK stay.

Key Facts

Garden warblers arrive from Africa in late April and leave by September
They breed in dense scrub and young woodland with complex insect-rich vegetation
Despite their name garden warblers rarely use gardens, preferring dense scrubby habitats
They are among the longest-distance migrants breeding in the UK
Insect decline threatens chick provisioning welfare during breeding

Welfare Considerations

Garden warbler welfare during UK breeding depends on abundant caterpillars and other invertebrates for chick provisioning. Insect decline from pesticide use and habitat loss reduces the food available for successful chick rearing, linking individual bird welfare to broader invertebrate conservation.

What You Can Do

Support scrub and young woodland management that provides garden warbler habitat
Advocate for pesticide reduction that protects invertebrate prey populations
Report garden warbler sightings to BTO breeding surveys
