Cattle Winter Housing Welfare

Housing cattle over winter is standard in the UK, and housing quality significantly affects welfare outcomes.

Key Facts

Most UK dairy and beef cattle are housed for 4-6 months per year
Cubicle design including cushioning and sizing affects lying comfort
Inadequate bedding and space causes lameness, injuries and social stress
Straw-bedded courts provide good welfare but require more management
Building design including lighting and ventilation affects respiratory and behavioural welfare

Welfare Considerations

Winter housing quality varies enormously. Poorly designed housing with inadequate space, bedding and ventilation causes multiple welfare compromises. Investment in housing quality is consistently associated with improved welfare outcomes and often improved production performance.
