Zoo Bear Foraging Enrichment

Bears are wide-ranging omnivores whose welfare in zoos depends heavily on opportunities for foraging behaviour expression.

Key Facts

Brown bears can travel 40-80 km daily in the wild while foraging
Stereotypic pacing in captive bears indicates chronic environmental impoverishment
Scatter feeding, puzzle feeders and buried food promote foraging behaviour
Enclosure size, complexity and seasonal variation in food provision improve welfare
Bear welfare assessments increasingly incorporate foraging and exploration indicators

Welfare Considerations

Foraging and exploration are core motivations for bears that cannot be replaced by other enrichment. Varied, complex food-finding opportunities that change regularly are the most effective welfare intervention for captive bears.

What You Can Do

Support zoos providing large, complex bear enclosures with daily foraging enrichment
Advocate for bear welfare standards that go beyond basic space requirements
Visit accredited sanctuaries and high-welfare facilities over those with impoverished bear exhibits
