Companion Animal Welfare

Horse Social Behaviour and Herd Welfare

Understanding horse social structure is essential for managing groups to promote welfare and reduce conflict.

Key Facts

Horses form stable dominance hierarchies that reduce ongoing aggression in established groups
Mutual grooming is an affiliative behaviour that reinforces social bonds
Introducing new horses to established groups triggers fighting and social stress
Resource distribution including multiple hay piles reduces competition and aggression
Preferred partnerships exist in horse groups and separation from bonded pairs causes distress

Welfare Considerations

Horse social welfare depends on group composition stability and resource management. Understanding individual social relationships within groups allows managers to make decisions that support positive social experiences and reduce conflict.

What You Can Do

Allow horses time to establish social hierarchies when new groups are formed
Provide sufficient resource distribution points to reduce competition in group housing
Avoid unnecessary separation of horses that have formed close social bonds
