Welfare Considerations

Dairy goats experience similar welfare challenges to dairy cows: painful procedures without adequate analgesia, early mother-kid separation causing distress in both animals, and often inadequate space or enrichment. Disbudding with hot irons or caustic paste causes acute pain and, without proper sedation and analgesia, represents a significant welfare concern. Intensive indoor systems deprive goats of their natural browsing, climbing, and exploratory behaviors.

Ask producers about their disbudding and pain management practices
Support longer dam-rearing periods and gradual weaning requirements
Reduce or eliminate dairy consumption
