Feather pecking is a serious welfare problem in laying hens causing pain, injury and death in affected birds.
Feather pecking represents a failure of housing environment to meet hens' behavioural needs. Addressing the root causes including foraging opportunity, lighting and stocking density is more welfare-positive than reactive beak trimming or wound treatment.
