Zoo Animal Welfare

Zoo Orangutan Cognitive Enrichment

Orangutans are among the most cognitively complex great apes, requiring sophisticated enrichment to maintain welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Orangutans are the most solitary of the great apes in the wild but show complex tool use
They have 97% DNA similarity to humans and demonstrate cultural learning and problem-solving
Puzzle feeders, foraging enrichment and novel materials maintain cognitive engagement
Touch-screen computer interfaces can provide learning and problem-solving enrichment
Arboreal access including high climbing structures meets strong vertical movement motivation

Welfare Considerations

Orangutan welfare depends on cognitive engagement and physical opportunities matching their highly intelligent and arboreal nature. Enrichment must be complex, novel and challenging to maintain welfare in long-lived intelligent animals with sophisticated cognitive abilities.

What You Can Do

Support zoos providing complex, regularly rotated cognitive enrichment for orangutans
Advocate for great ape welfare standards requiring documented cognitive enrichment programmes
Consider donating to in-situ orangutan conservation addressing habitat and palm oil threats
