Zoo & Captive Animal Welfare

Zoo Cheetah Welfare and Running Space

Cheetahs are the fastest land mammals and require adequate space for high-speed running. Providing running opportunities is a specific welfare requirement for this species.

Key Facts

Cheetahs can accelerate to 70mph in short bursts during wild hunting
Captive cheetahs with limited running space show high levels of pacing and stereotypy
Large run areas allowing sprint behaviour significantly improve welfare outcomes
Cheetahs in zoological collections often suffer reproductive problems linked to stress
Conservation breeding programmes depend on high welfare standards

Welfare Considerations

Cheetah welfare in captivity requires access to adequate running space. Facilities that cannot provide meaningful sprint opportunities should not keep this species. Conservation success for the most endangered large cat depends on high welfare.
