Dog Welfare and Separation Anxiety Prevention

Separation anxiety is extremely common in dogs and causes significant suffering. Prevention through early training is more effective than treatment of established anxiety.

Key Facts

Separation anxiety affects an estimated 17-25% of dogs in the UK
Pandemic dogs showed elevated separation anxiety after owners returned to work
Graduated absence training from puppyhood prevents most cases
Dogs should learn to be comfortable alone for progressively longer periods
Prevention requires commitment but is far easier and more effective than treatment

Welfare Considerations

Separation anxiety prevention through graduated alone training from puppyhood is one of the most impactful welfare investments for dogs. Treating established separation anxiety is possible but significantly harder and slower than prevention.

What You Can Do

Begin graduated alone training from the first week with a new puppy or dog
Use a trainer to establish a systematic desensitisation programme for alone time
Avoid inadvertently reinforcing anxiety by rushing back to a distressed dog
Seek professional behavioural assessment if anxiety is already established
