Dog Welfare and Coat Care

Coat care is a welfare requirement for many dog breeds. Matting causes pain, skin disease, and movement restriction, while appropriate grooming maintains comfort and health.

Key Facts

Long and curly-coated breeds require regular professional grooming to prevent matting
Severe matting requires clipping rather than dematting to avoid causing pain
Grooming familiarisation from puppyhood prevents fear responses during grooming
Pain during grooming including ear cleaning and nail trimming is a welfare concern
Some breed coat types including Komondors and Puli require specialist management

Welfare Considerations

Coat care is a welfare obligation for owners of long or curly-coated breeds. Neglect leads to painful matting, skin disease, and restricted movement. Positive grooming experiences from puppyhood prevent fear and pain.

What You Can Do

Establish a regular grooming routine appropriate to your dog's coat type
Familiarise puppies with handling and grooming using positive reinforcement
Seek professional grooming for coats you cannot maintain at home
Never allow matting to develop to the point where dematting would be painful
