Cat Welfare and Play Behaviour Science

Play behaviour is fundamental to cat welfare. Understanding the prey sequence and how to optimise play provides practical guidance for enriching feline lives.

Key Facts

Cats have an instinctive prey sequence: orient, stalk, pounce, grab, kill, consume
Play that follows the prey sequence is most satisfying for cats
Interactive wand toys enable the stalk-pounce sequence better than static toys
Ending play with a food reward completes the prey sequence and prevents frustration
Older cats still benefit from play adapted to their physical capabilities

Welfare Considerations

Play behaviour is not optional enrichment but a fundamental welfare need for cats. Daily interactive play following the prey sequence provides mental stimulation, physical exercise, and emotional satisfaction.

What You Can Do

Provide at least two daily interactive play sessions using wand or feather toys
Follow the prey sequence allowing stalking, pouncing, and catching
End play sessions with a food reward to complete the sequence
Adapt play to your cat's age and physical capabilities
