Zoo & Captive Animal Welfare

Zoo Komodo Dragon Welfare

Komodo dragons are the world's largest living lizard with specific thermal and feeding welfare needs. Meeting these in captivity requires specialised facilities and management.

Key Facts

Komodo dragons are ectothermic and require a range of temperatures for thermoregulation
They are ambush predators and feeding enrichment can engage natural hunting behaviour
Komodo dragons are largely solitary and must be managed carefully to prevent combat
Their venom system is complex and keeper safety requires appropriate protocols
Zoo populations contribute to conservation of this vulnerable Indonesian species

Welfare Considerations

Komodo dragon welfare requires appropriate thermal gradients, feeding enrichment, and careful social management. Facilities that cannot provide these fundamental requirements should not keep this species.
