Zoo Hippopotamus Welfare

Hippopotamuses require deep water for thermoregulation and skin health. Their welfare needs are highly specific and inadequate facilities cause significant welfare harm.

Key Facts

Hippos spend most of their time submerged in water to thermoregulate and protect their skin
They must have access to pools deep enough for full submersion throughout the day
Hippos are semi-social and require careful management of grouping
Skin condition including skin cracking indicates inadequate water access
Hippo populations globally are declining and zoo breeding has conservation value

Welfare Considerations

Hippopotamus welfare fundamentally requires deep water access throughout the day. Facilities that cannot provide appropriately deep pools cannot meet hippo welfare needs regardless of other provision.
