Wild Smooth Newt Welfare

Smooth newts are common UK amphibians but face habitat loss pressures. Garden ponds are among the most important conservation tools for this species.

Key Facts

Smooth newts breed in ponds and require terrestrial habitat for the rest of the year
UK newt populations depend increasingly on garden ponds as natural habitats are lost
Garden ponds without fish provide ideal breeding habitat for smooth newts
Pesticides in garden run-off can harm aquatic stages of newt development
Smooth newts eat invertebrates in water and on land throughout the year

Welfare Considerations

Smooth newt welfare is linked to pond habitat availability and quality. Creating and maintaining wildlife ponds without fish provides critical welfare and conservation support for this common but declining species.

What You Can Do
