Foie gras production involves force-feeding ducks and geese to enlarge their livers, a practice banned in many countries but still produced and imported widely.
Force-feeding causes esophageal injury, liver pathology, and respiratory distress in affected birds. The rapid enlargement of the liver compresses other organs, causing difficulty breathing and movement. Birds in force-feeding facilities cannot engage in normal preening, social, or comfort behaviors due to restraint and physical impairment from hepatic lipidosis. The procedure is performed multiple times daily for 2-4 weeks, meaning each bird experiences hundreds of forced feeding episodes before slaughter.
