Wild Harvest Mouse Welfare and Conservation

Harvest mice are declining rapidly in the UK with agricultural intensification destroying the tall grass and cereal habitats they depend on.

Key Facts

Harvest mice are the smallest British rodent, weighing only 5-6g
They build spherical grass nests in tall vegetation for breeding and shelter
Loss of traditional haymeadows and hedge-cutting practices has reduced habitat dramatically
Harvest mouse recording schemes reveal populations concentrated in remaining rough grass habitats
Garden planting of tall grasses can provide supplementary habitat for harvest mice

Welfare Considerations

Harvest mice face welfare threats through habitat loss leaving individuals without the tall vegetation cover needed for nesting, shelter, and foraging. Conservation habitat management maintaining long grass directly improves welfare for this declining species.

What You Can Do

Leave areas of long grass and wild vegetation in gardens and green spaces
Support harvest mouse recording and conservation programs
Advocate for grass margin agri-environment payments that benefit harvest mice
