Wild Polecat Range Recovery Welfare

Polecat recovery in England from near extinction demonstrates how protection and persecution reduction transforms wild animal welfare.

Key Facts

Polecats were reduced to a small Welsh stronghold by the early 20th century due to persecution
Recovery followed legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
Polecats now occupy most of Wales and much of England following sustained population recovery
The main conservation challenge is hybridization with escaped domestic ferrets
Polecats are important predators of rabbits and rodents in recovered range areas

Welfare Considerations

Polecat recovery is a conservation success story that translated directly into welfare benefit for individual animals - more polecats living and breeding in appropriate habitat rather than persecuted out of existence.
