Cat Outdoor Enrichment Catios

Enclosed outdoor cat spaces (catios) provide a safe compromise that gives indoor cats outdoor stimulation without the risks of free roaming.

Key Facts

Catios range from small window boxes to large garden enclosures with tunnels and trees
Outdoor access reduces boredom, provides fresh air, and allows natural behaviors
Enclosed catios eliminate risks from road traffic, other animals, and predators
Mesh construction allows airflow, sunlight, and sensory engagement with the outdoor environment
DIY and commercially available catio options suit various budgets and space constraints

Welfare Considerations

Catios represent an excellent welfare solution for indoor cats that balances the benefits of outdoor access with the safety of containment. They enable hunting behavior, exploration, and sensory enrichment without the welfare risks of unsupervised outdoor roaming.
