Wild Purple Sandpiper Winter Welfare

Purple sandpipers winter on rocky UK coastlines where their welfare depends on undisturbed foraging access on exposed rocky shores.

Key Facts

Purple sandpipers are among the most cold-adapted waders, wintering on UK shores from Arctic breeding grounds
They feed on invertebrates in rocky intertidal zones and are vulnerable to disturbance
Human disturbance on coastal rocky shores causes purple sandpipers to flush and lose foraging time
Rocky coastline access management balancing recreation and wildlife protection is needed
Purple sandpiper numbers in the UK are small and locally concentrated making disturbance more significant

Welfare Considerations

Purple sandpiper welfare during the winter depends on access to undisturbed rocky shore foraging habitat. Coastal recreation on rocky shores during winter months can displace these birds from key foraging areas.

What You Can Do

Observe purple sandpipers from a distance without approaching foraging groups
Stay on coastal paths and avoid scrambling over rocky shores where waders are feeding
Support coastal wildlife trust reserves with winter wader protection
