Dog Perinatal and Neonatal Welfare

The perinatal period from late pregnancy through the first weeks of puppy life determines foundational welfare outcomes.

Key Facts

Neonatal puppies are completely dependent on the dam for warmth, colostrum, and stimulation
Hypothermia is the leading cause of neonatal puppy death in the first week
Early positive tactile stimulation between 3-16 days improves stress resilience in adult dogs
Puppy birth weight and early weight gain are key welfare indicators in the neonatal period
Fading puppy syndrome has multiple causes including infection, hypothermia, and inadequate nutrition

Welfare Considerations

Neonatal puppy welfare is entirely dependent on appropriate conditions and attentive management. Understanding the risks and interventions of the first weeks enables breeders and owners to provide the care that determines lifelong welfare outcomes.

What You Can Do

Monitor neonatal puppy weight daily to detect welfare problems early
Maintain appropriate environmental temperature for neonates who cannot thermoregulate
Seek veterinary advice immediately for any neonatal puppy failing to gain weight
