Wild Sparrowhawk Urban Welfare

Sparrowhawks have successfully adapted to urban environments across the UK, but face specific welfare challenges from window collisions, rodenticides and domestic cats.

Key Facts

Sparrowhawks are common urban predators, hunting garden birds at feeders
Window strikes cause brain injury and death in sparrowhawks and their prey species
Secondary rodenticide poisoning from rats and mice kills sparrowhawks annually
Cat predation takes juveniles learning to hunt in suburban gardens
Nest disturbance is illegal and damages breeding success

Welfare Considerations

Urban sparrowhawks face preventable welfare threats from human activity. Simple measures reduce collisions and poisoning at individual household level.

What You Can Do

Apply window decals or external screens to prevent bird-window strikes
Never use second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides near gardens with raptors
Do not disturb sparrowhawk nests if found on your property
