Free range egg production offers more space than caged systems but significant welfare variation exists between free range operations, with some barely better than cage-free indoor systems.
Free range labels are often misleading about the actual welfare of hens. Large flocks with limited outdoor access points mean that dominant hens monopolize the exit and subordinate birds never go outside. Outdoor ranges that are overgrazed dirt lots provide neither shade, foraging opportunity, nor predator cover. Parasites including red mite infestations cause severe irritation and anemia in free range and organic systems where chemical treatment is restricted. The welfare reality of many free range operations is closer to cage-free indoor systems than to the pastoral image the label evokes.
