Wild Brent Goose Welfare Progress

Light-bellied and dark-bellied brent goose populations show varying welfare trends linked to breeding success in Arctic tundra and winter food availability.

Key Facts

Dark-bellied brent geese wintering on English coasts have recovered from 1970s lows
Light-bellied brent from Iceland winter on Irish coasts and have shown strong population growth
Breeding success varies dramatically with lemming cycles affecting Arctic fox predation pressure
Hunting of brent geese was stopped in the UK in 1954, contributing significantly to population recovery
Zostera seagrass restoration is slowly rebuilding coastal foraging habitat for brent geese

Welfare Considerations

Brent goose welfare progress illustrates how legislative protection combined with habitat management can achieve significant population recovery. Ongoing seagrass restoration will further support individual welfare.
