Wild Nuthatch Woodland Welfare

Nuthatches are thriving in UK woodland but require mature deciduous trees with natural cavities, and their welfare reflects woodland management quality.

Key Facts

Nuthatches are the only UK bird that can walk headfirst down tree trunks
They nest in natural tree holes or woodpecker cavities, plastering the entrance to size with mud
UK nuthatch populations have expanded northward into Scotland as woodlands mature
They are territorial year-round and highly dependent on beech and oak mast in winter
Nest boxes are used successfully where natural cavities are scarce in managed woodland

Welfare Considerations

Nuthatch welfare benefits from mature woodland with old trees providing natural cavities. Forest management that retains veteran trees and promotes cavity availability supports nuthatch populations.

What You Can Do

Retain old and veteran trees in woodland management to provide natural nesting cavities
Install nuthatch nest boxes in managed woodland where natural holes are limited
Record nuthatch sightings through BTO woodland bird surveys
