Cattle Welfare Sanctuary Models

Farm animal sanctuaries provide lifetime care for cattle rescued from the food system, offering individual welfare and opportunities to study natural cattle behaviour.

Key Facts

Cattle sanctuaries including The Gentle Barn and Edgar's Mission provide permanent rescue homes
Rescued cattle live for 15-20 years in sanctuary versus 2-3 years in commercial production
Sanctuaries demonstrate natural cattle social behaviour including complex hierarchy and play
Behavioural research at sanctuaries has contributed to understanding cattle cognition and social bonds
Sanctuary cattle often receive veterinary care that commercial systems cannot economically justify

Welfare Considerations

Farm animal sanctuaries demonstrate what cattle welfare looks like when economics are removed as a constraint. The contrast between sanctuary and commercial life expectations is a powerful welfare communication tool.
