Wild Whinchat Migration Welfare

Whinchats are long-distance migrants from sub-Saharan Africa that have declined severely in the UK due to habitat loss on breeding grounds and food scarcity on migration.

Key Facts

UK whinchat populations declined by 57% between 1995 and 2018
They breed on upland meadows and heathland with tall vegetation for song posts
Invertebrate abundance during the breeding season determines chick survival rates
Migration mortality occurs at sea crossings and in heavily hunted Mediterranean countries
Climate change is altering vegetation structure on breeding grounds through earlier spring growth

Welfare Considerations

Whinchat welfare requires action across the full migratory range and on UK breeding grounds. Maintaining diverse upland meadows and reducing hunting pressure on migration are complementary priorities.

What You Can Do

Support upland meadow management that maintains diverse vegetation for whinchat breeding
Donate to BirdLife International working on flyway hunting reduction
Record whinchat sightings through BTO surveys during spring and autumn migration
