Horses are intensely social herd animals, and separation from companions causes significant psychological distress that can manifest as dangerous behaviours and chronic stress.
Horses evolved as herd animals with complex social bonds. Forced isolation causes acute stress responses including vocalisation, pacing, sweating and self-injury attempts. Management systems should provide constant social contact through paddock sharing, adjacent stabling, or at minimum visual and tactile contact.
